For those of you who find doing nothing but eating, drinking and lazing around too much to bear, there are other more aerobic activities on offer, Vanuatu is famous for its scuba diving locations, game fishing, golf, kayaking, horse riding, surfing, jungle zip line and more physically challenging activities like a quad bike tour with Off Road Adventures.

Nearby is Turtle Bay, about 4 km east of Narpow Point, which charges a modest fee to use the beach snorkel with the turtles and there is the fabulous blue hole for snorkeling. About 35 minutes drive in the same direction is Eton Beach (adjacent to Eton village) this is another beautiful reef enclosed beach with a cool stream emptying into the bay.

A modest charge also applies here, take the snorkel and goggles and a picnic lunch, it’s heaven. Don’t forget your reef shoes. A round-island drive is also a fun trip, which takes around two to three hours now that the round island road is fully tar sealed. On the way from town (about 20 minutes drive) at Rentapau stop off at Eden on the River, where you can pick up fresh local snacks while the kids get to meet animals from horses to pigs and cross the suspension over the cascading waters.

Havannah Harbour on the north east coast has a few roadside stalls selling shells and old WWII coke bottles. Havannah Harbour is home to the ship ‘Congoola’ , which operates snorkeling and diving tours around the area.

If you’d rather something more expensive but efficient there’s always the local helicopter, which can pick you up on your beach out the front of the house and will give you an aerial tour or drop you at specific places. If you’d like to go further afield there are many islands in the group, which are worth visiting for cultural, and sightseeing purposes, these are serviced either by Air Vanuatu or private charter planes and boats. The most popular are Tanna for its active volcano and custom village experiences and Espiritu Santo. Santo is really worth a visit for the famous Champagne Beach and several Blue Holes.

For a real eco-luxe break try Ratua Private Island which is a 25 minutes boat ride from Luganville but a world away from anywhere. Not cheap but absolutely fabulous. Or take a leisurely trip to town to see Port Vila’s colourful markets and do a little souvenir shopping.
